How to Create a QR Code for WhatsApp

Create a WhatsApp QR code with the correct international number, optional prefilled message and clear call to action, then test app and browser behavior.

A WhatsApp QR code can shorten the path from a flyer, counter card or product package to a customer conversation. The destination has to be built carefully: the phone number should use the correct international format, any prefilled message should be short and useful, and the printed label should make it clear that WhatsApp will open. Different phones may hand the link from the camera to the browser or app in slightly different ways, so testing the complete journey matters. This guide covers setup, verification and practical placement.

Decide between chat link and contact details

A WhatsApp QR can open a chat link to a specific number or, depending on the tool, encode related contact information. Choose the action you want the user to take.

For customer support, opening a chat is usually clearer than sending users to a general profile.

Use the correct international number

Enter the full country code and number in the format expected by the WhatsApp link structure. Remove accidental spaces or punctuation when required.

Test the link in a browser before encoding it so you know it opens the intended chat.

Add a prefilled message carefully

A prefilled message can help users start a conversation, such as “I need help with order 123”. Keep it short and relevant.

Do not prefill sensitive information or misleading consent statements.

Generate the code

Use the supported WhatsApp or URL type and verify the exact destination in the preview. Keep the design high-contrast.

If the business number may change, consider using a stable contact page you control rather than printing the number permanently.

Set user expectations

Label the code “Chat with us on WhatsApp” or similar. Users should know that scanning opens a third-party messaging application.

Do not imply 24/7 availability unless the business truly provides it.

Test app and browser behavior

Some phones may open WhatsApp directly while others may first open a browser or ask the user to install the app.

Test on multiple devices and confirm the experience remains understandable.

Privacy and support handling

If users send personal details through chat, handle those messages according to your privacy and support procedures.

Avoid asking for payment-card details or other unnecessary sensitive data through a general chat channel.

WhatsApp QR checklist

Verify the number, country code, message text, destination, label and mobile behavior.

Keep the business profile current so the scan leads to a recognizable and trustworthy contact point.

A practical WhatsApp test before you print

Create the code with the complete international phone number and scan it from at least two phones. Confirm that WhatsApp opens the intended conversation and that the pre-filled message, if used, is readable and still makes sense when a customer sees it without additional context. Test once while WhatsApp is already open and once from the camera app because the hand-off can feel different.

For business signage, also test the destination account itself. The profile name, photo and business description should make it obvious that the scanner reached the correct company. A technically valid QR code can still create a poor experience when the receiving WhatsApp profile looks unrelated or inactive.

Where WhatsApp QR codes commonly fail

The most frequent setup mistake is using a local-format number instead of a complete international number. Another is encoding a temporary or incorrect wa.me link. Long pre-filled messages can also create unnecessarily dense QR patterns, especially when spaces and punctuation are URL-encoded.

Keep the first message short and let the conversation continue naturally. If the code will be printed on flyers or packaging, save the exact destination URL in your campaign notes so it can be checked later without having to decode the artwork.

Placement example for a service business

A service company can place a WhatsApp QR code near a short instruction such as “Scan to request a quote.” The landing action should open a conversation with a concise starter message such as a request for availability. This gives the customer a predictable result and gives staff enough context to respond.

Do not place the code at the very bottom of a poster where it may be folded or cropped. On a counter card, leave visible white space around the code and keep the call to action close enough that users understand they belong together.
